Read Mobile Defense – Part 1 of 2
Everyone slept well the remainder of the night and woke up just in time to check out at 11a.m. Tyler relayed the intel he received from mobile defense and all was on board to track down the driver that decided to keep the device. He logged on the laptop and verified the driver’s current location. The driver was near the South Loop area, which was less than a mile away from their current position. Tyler asked to borrow Kevin’s phone to see if they can launch the mobile defense application from his mobile phone and upon his attempt, it successfully connected to his HTC Evo from the iPhone 3GS device. A grin quickly grew on his face being pleased with the results, he was determined to find the thief.
“What will you do when we find this guy?” asked Dean.
“I’m going to hop into the shotgun side of taxi and tell him to drive somewhere. Then I’m going to examine the vehicle for any signs of my phone. If it is not in eye’s view I will call the phone with Kevin’s phone and then I will…with a firm voice ask him to return my phone. If he refused I will slap him in the eye and take it either way”.
“You going to get into the taxi?”
“That’s right. And I’m going to slap the mother fucker.”
“Alright! Let’s do this shit!
Tyler checked out of the hotel at the front desk and while Dean went to the garage near by to pull out the car. He drove it to the front of the hotel to pick up the rest of the squad. They threw their bags into the trunk and hopped in the car, ready for action. Tyler sat in the back seat actively monitoring the activities of the driver and then notices that his phone had only 10% battery life left. If anything was to be done, they would had to make paste. Dean started driving south down State street only to realize that they were on empty.
“Let’s stop by the gas station first and fill up on gas. We don’t want to go on a car chase with an empty tank.”
Tyler hesitated on the decision because of the battery life left, but he knew it to be a logical idea. “Alright, let’s make this quick. My phone’s battery is almost dead.” He wasn’t fond of the idea and had a bad feeling about losing an opportunity to recover the device. They drove a couple blocks west to the nearest gas station and pulled in. Ahead was a taxi van that occupied two gas pumps while all the other ones were occupied also. Dean pulled up behind the driver and beeped his horns but the vehicle did not move. Kevin got out the car only to find out that the vehicle was unoccupied. He got back in and pulled over to the opposite side where a pump just became available. Immediately after finishing, the occupant of the abandoned vehicle approached Dean.
“Do you have jumped cables?” he inquired.
“Yeah, I do.” Even before he could continue speaking, he already knew he dug himself too deep and couldn’t avoid answering the next question.
“Can you help me jump my car?”
“Sure…” Being the type of person Dean is, he couldn’t refuse the request after already admitting to having jumper cables. Whereas if he knew that the question would immediately followed, he may had answered it differently considering Tyler’s current circumstances. And so, he pulled his car to the opposite of the taxi van and connected the positives to the negatives to charge the battery of vehicle while Tyler constantly monitored the location of his phone and stared with nervousness at the battery symbol slowing draining down. The attempt to charge the battery of the taxi van was unsuccessful and after a good 10 minutes, Tyler called it off and persuaded everyone that we needed to get going. They hopped back into the car and at long last, the chase was on. The destination was to Grant Park, only a half mile away. They arrived there prompt and looked around for a red taxi. Grant Park was big and it proved to be a lot more difficult to find the vehicle. In that next minute when Tyler went to refresh the location, the connection was lost. The battery on the phone was dead and he lost his only lead to ever recovering it. They drove around the area for another ten minutes until Tyler was satisfied that there was nothing else they could do at the area. “All is lost”.
After losing faith, Dean and party made it out to Chinatown and had Dim Sum for brunch. After which, they drove back to Dean’s house forty minutes west of the city. They got back, washed up and took a relaxing nap. The plan was to go back into the city later on in the day because Dean’s girlfriend had just arrived back into Chicago from Los Angeles and had to attend a farewell party for a friend that was going to leave for Rome to study and explore for a year. Tyler hadn’t lost hope yet and kept trying to connect to his phone from mobile defense. Around 4 p.m. he was once again able to connect to the device and …continue story
